Queen City residents voice concerns during city council public safety meeting

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A long and dramatic Burlington city council meeting resulted in the passage of at least one of the resolutions presented by Queen City Democrats to improve public safety.

Moms shared their fears of taking their kids to Fletcher Free Library, and in turn, democrats presented their four resolutions to call on the legislature to ban guns in bars, establish a public safety hub downtown, renovate the Burlington police station, or build a new one, and remove the current cap on the number of the police officers in the city.

A majority of those giving public testimony were in favor of the resolutions.

The resolutions were amended ahead of the city council meeting with progressive input. Councilor Grant publicly confronted Democrats about why they decided to build a public safety plan without representation from her district.

”The entire central district representation was not consulted, that’s the facts. We’re the most affected district,” said city councilor Melo Grant.

As of this article’s publishing, two resolutions have passed, including the one to call on the legislature to address gun safety, and removing the cap on officers.

The decisions for the potential public safety hub and renovating/building a new police station have been postponed until September 23rd.
