MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Top election officials are trying to get more veterans involved at the polls.
At a meeting in Montpelier of town and city clerks from across Vermont, Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas and others urged communities to “vet the vote” and help recruit veterans as local poll workers.
It’s estimated that last election there were around 200 veteran poll workers in Vermont, and officials say veterans are uniquely qualified for this job thanks to their dedication to serving their communities and the country.
“We’ve already proven that we want to serve our country, we’ve already been out there out aside anything that we think about our country and that helps when you step up to serve your city town,” said Director of We the Veterans of Military Families Julie Hendricks.
It’s estimated that 1 million poll workers are needed nationwide.
