St. Johnsbury School District receives grant for more fruits and veggies

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – As the St. Johnsbury School District is starting their school year, officials are keeping health and wellness in mind.

The school district has been given a 46 thousand dollar grant from the Agency of Education.

It’s called the Fresh Food and Vegetables grant.

The school has received the award before, but this time, they will use it to focus on bringing new, unique produce to their students.

Superintendent, Karen Conroy says, the grant is a huge help to their lunch program, as the economy has made it difficult for many families to keep up with meals for their kids.

“We have a food pantry in our school as well, and a backpack program that supports students at home as well. To provide the same opportunities that a lot of other families may have. Just to try new fruits and vegetables,” Conroy said.

Officials hope the completion of the school’s new playground space will help with health and wellness for students as well.
