TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. (WCAX) – A social media post spread a noncredible threat and concern throughout New York’s North Country.
Tupper Lake Central School District Superintendent Jaycee Welsh says a Facebook post over the weekend appeared to threaten the Malone Central School District, as well as Gouverneur.
She says law enforcement investigated it and found it to be a noncredible threat from out of state.
However, she says the post continued to spread on social media, alarming families and leading to the district beefing up security.
“I think making sure we are transparent to staff and families when something is going on that we do not want fear, we want facts. So, making sure that we are transparent with our families and our staff like we were on Sunday night,” Welsh said.
“Every single incident has to be looked at as though it is real. There has to be thorough threat analysis and, you know, unfortunately but fortunately, that includes these false incidents,” Saranac Lake Police Chief Darin Perrotte said.
Added security measures included an extra police officer at the middle and high schools, and LP Quinn Elementary School, as well as walk-throughs by police throughout the day.
