Burlington Police investigating drowning death of infant at shelter

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Authorities say a four-month-old child is dead after apparently drowning at a Burlington community shelter.

It happened around 1 p.m. Friday. Burlington Police say they received a 911 call that a four-month-old child had drowned at a Main Street building that serves as a family shelter for COTS, The Committee on Temporary Shelter. Responding EMS crews took over CPR from the child’s mother. The child was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The shelter is across the street from Edmunds Middle School. COTS says the Main Street Family Shelter operates year-round, providing emergency shelter for up to 10 families at a time. It has housing support services and specialized programming for children.

Police say the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office has been notified as well as the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.
