Trail experts encourage hikers to branch out during busy season

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – On Friday, foliage hot spots will see even more foot traffic during one of the busiest fall weekends on the calendar.

But before you hit your favorite hike, trail experts are asking you to branch out.

During the best of Vermont’s colorful display, trails like Sterling Pond or Stowe Pinnacle rarely see a lull in foot traffic.

At Camel’s Hump – another popular choice – the rush is causing problems.

With the Duxbury side of the mountain closed for flood repairs, trail managers say the Huntington side is overrun with parked cars that impede local and emergency traffic.

That’s why they’re asking visitors to consider taking a hike on another mountain.

“We’re really encouraging folks to get out there and explore a little bit and if you don’t know where to go give us a call and we can point you somewhere,” said Keegan Tierney of Green Mountain Club.

You can find a list of alternative hikes here.

And if you can’t stay away from your go-to trail, staff ask you to drive with caution and care for locals.
