Stowe church spire removed for repairs

STOWE, Vt. (WCAX) – A staple in Stowe’s skyline is coming down for repairs.

For the first time in 161 years, the spire on the Stowe Community Church was removed Tuesday morning for restoration. It’s one of 14 renovation projects the church is undertaking.

Church Pastor Dan Haugh says the spire was in desperate repair and they were concerned it could have come crashing down. “It was our fear. But again, for over 150 years old, with all the weather we have in Vermont, all the rain, the heavy winters, it wasn’t surprising, but that was certainly our fear,” he said.

The church still needs to raise $300,000 for the project. The hope is the new spire will be installed in the spring, allowing one of the most photographed churches in New England to stand tall again.
