Sen. Sanders and Gerald Malloy talk immigration, abortion, taxes, and more on WCAX U.S Senate Debate

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – It was a fiery debate over age and rhetoric. Gerald Malloy and Bernie Sanders may agree on a few things: cutting defense spending, securing the border, loving their families, but on divisive topics like climate change and abortion, they couldn’t be on further ends of the spectrum.

“Every scientists in the world, I think he even said, believes we’re in a existential climate crisis, that’s not true at all,” said Malloy.

“The state of Vermont, in overwhelming numbers, enshrined abortion rights in our own constitution, do you think you’re representing Vermont’s views when you think it was okay for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade,” said Sanders.

Malloy, a West Point graduate and a business man, says he’s got what it takes to bring Vermont’s economy to a steadier place.

Senator Sanders, who’s served as a state senator since 2007, says his track record speaks for itself. “With my experience, with my seniority, I did not feel like I could walk away from representing Vermont at this difficult moment,” he said.

The two brought the essence of their campaigns to the WCAX studio. Sanders says he wants a more progressive income tax to make health care more affordable, to cut military spending, specifically in Israel, and to regulate billionaires tech companies.

“Humanity is developing technologies for productivity, workers should benefit from that, not just the large corporations,” said Sanders.

Malloy says he wants to take a tougher stance on immigration, center public safety, and most of all, unseat senator Sanders and bring new blood from Vermont to Congress.
