WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – A northern New York man appointed by Donald Trump as the new administration’s “border czar” says he will consider the North Country every day in his new position.
President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend said Tom Homan, his former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement director, will serve in his incoming administration’s plans to control the border.
Homan sat down with our sister station WWNY to discuss his plan to secure the northern border.
“We’ll absolutely have more agents here but we need to end catch and release. If you’re gonna cross the northern St. Lawrence River or the lake or on foot, they need to know right from the start — ‘You can come, but you’re going to be arrested. You’re not going to be released. And we’re going to remove you.’ There’s not going to be like the Biden Administration where we process you and release you and you don’t show up in court. You’re not walking away. We’re gonna lock you up. So, more agents, we’ll end catch and release, and President Trump will need to work with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and say, ‘Look, you need to enforce the immigration laws you have because this is a gateway to the U.S.’” Homan said.
Homan is from West Carthage, where he previously worked as a police officer and Border Patrol agent before taking over ICE.
