New Vt. report indicates improvements in maternal health

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont health officials say new data indicates improvements in maternal health over the last several years, including high rates of prenatal care and breastfeeding, and a reduction in drinking and cigarette use during pregnancy.

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System surveyed mothers between 2016 and 2022 about their experiences before and after giving birth, including substance use, mental health, and preventive care. Some of the positive findings include an 8% decrease in cigarette use, a 5% decrease in alcohol use, and 100% of new parents having a car seat for their child.

The data also highlights areas of concern, including increased use of cannabis and e-cigarettes, and higher rates of depression.
