Life at camp in Antarctica

HANOVER, NH. (WCAX) – Eating in Antarctica – the food is better than you might think.

That is according to Jacob Chalif who is in Allan Hills, Antarctica for two months.

The Dartmouth graduate student is with the National Science Foundation’s Coldex team looking for the world’s oldest ice.

The crew drills in the field for most of the day, and then returns to camp for dinner.

Chalif say the meals are top notch on the barren continent.

“So we have this wonderful camp manager and field coordinator that handle things around camp for us, they make incredible food. I’ve had some of the best food I’ve had in recent memory here which is kind of surprising, hey do magic in that tiny tent kitchen that they have. Things like stir fries, curries, pasta. Last night we had a polenta.” Chalif said.

Of course, warm food likely tastes better when temperatures are in the negatives all day and winds are blowing consistently at 40 miles per hour.
