BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A controversial vote is on Burlington City Council’s agenda.
WCAX has reported efforts by Burlington leaders to keep buildings free of graffiti.
On Monday, an ordinance is back on the agenda.
The Memorial Auditorium is just one building in Burlington that’s been the victim of vandalism.
In November, the City Council considered a new ordinance to address the persistent problem, but one measure had the proposal on ice.
The ordinance would increase enforcement and implement a public reporting system for graffiti.
However, the proposal would also allow people who feel there has been public hate speech made against them to sue the person responsible.
It was that last part that caused concern on the council, with some members saying it could violate the First Amendment and expose the city to lawsuits.
The issue was table at the last city council meeting but is back on the agenda Monday
