Sugarbush looking for rain to replenish snowmaking pond

WARREN, Vt. (WCAX) – This week’s warmer temperatures could actually be a positive for one Vermont ski resort.

It’s been a touch-and-go season at Sugarbush. After pushing back their opening twice, they currently have one lift open. That’s because this fall’s drought limited how much snow they could make. State regulations limit how much water they can divert from the Mad River to their snowmaking ponds.

With warmer weather expected to melt some snow at lower elevations, the resort is hopeful it will replenish its snowmaking capabilities heading into busier parts of the season. “You never wish for rain in the ski industry, but I think there is a silver lining here at last for us. Hopefully, it doesn’t do too much damage to the terrain we currently have but it will hopefully do a lot of good for our snowmaking pond and give it an opportunity to recharge,” said the resort’s John Bleh.

He says trails closer to the top of the mountain are in good shape.
