New law aims to boost number of NY businesses donating food

ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – More food will go to New Yorkers in need.

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a new law expanding the state’s food donation and food scraps recycling program.

The program has been around since 2022 and has been credited with diverting tens of millions of pounds of food to those in need.

Under the law, businesses are now required to donate excess edible food if they are within 50 miles of an organics recycler.
