MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission is looking for a third member to round out its membership.
The state-funded group was created in March 2023 to document how state laws and policies have discriminated against marginalized communities, including those impacted by the eugenics movement of the 1930s, which led to the sterilization of over 250 people, many of them with disabilities and members of Indigenous tribes.
Two of the three commissioners have been appointed, and the search committee is now accepting applications for the third position. Commissioners are considered state employees with paid time off, benefits, and an annual salary of $97,073.
All commissioner positions end in 2027, then the commission is expected to submit a final report with recommendations, including possible reparations.
