Independent candidate looks to shake-up Vt. House speaker race

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont’s legislative session begins on Wednesday, and there may momentum building to elect a new House speaker.

Independent Rep. Laura Sibilia of Dover says 21 Democratic, Progressive, and Independent lawmakers have pledged to support her in the race for the speaker’s gavel.

Sibilia says she’s running after last year’s double-digit education property tax increase. Incumbent House Speaker, Democrat Jill Krowinski says she’s focused on education, health care, and housing.

Whoever secures a majority of votes from the 150 member House will win. It’s still unclear who house Republicans will support in the race.
