BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – We have new information about the fatal shooting of Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland.
WCAX News has now learned the name of that third person we first told you was involved in the case, though her connection remains unclear at this point.
For more than a week, we have been reporting that there was a third person involved with the shooting of Maland during a traffic stop in Coventry.
Investigators told us that person was not at the scene of the deadly shootout, but now we are learning the feds have been trying to find Michelle Jacqueline Zajko, and they have been asking gun dealers for help finding her.
WCAX has obtained a letter that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent to gun shops in our region after Maland was killed. The letter states they are looking for “assistance in identifying any firearms purchases made by Michelle Jacqueline Zajko.” The alert names Zajko as a person of interest in the shooting of Maland.
We also confirmed through sources that an officer alert was sent out for Zajko. This is not an arrest warrant but an alert to law enforcement to exercise caution if they come in contact with Zajko.
Despite all of this, it’s unclear whether Zajko is in custody and why the FBI never put an alert out to the public about her.
And questions still remain about what led up to the shooting.
Meanwhile, Teresa Youngblut, the only person in custody in Maland’s death is set to appear in court Thursday.
